Stopping Panic Attacks In Two Simple Steps
When you suffer from panic attacks, it seems like you can’t do anything to stop them from happening or alleviate the symptoms. You might have given up hope even though you know how bad panic attacks can get. But a panic attack can be lessened or even halted by several simple steps.
Remember that panic attacks can be caused by any number of different things. In some cases you can have panic attacks because of a bad memory from your childhood. Sometimes, a tragedy will make a panic attack occur such as a nasty car accident with a tractor-trailer or being raped. Panic attacks can however be a symptom of a more general inability to deal with stress. Panic attacks, of course, are sometimes cause by more immediate events like losing a car, a house, or a job.
There are steps to stop panic attacks no matter what the cause. Once they’ve been realized and looked into critically, you’re liable to stop having so many panic attacks, letting you function in the “real” world. You will no longer suffer panic attacks from everyday situations like shopping, paying bills, or looking for groceries.
Stopping Panic Attacks In Simple steps
Step 1 – Identify the Trigger
Finding out what triggers your panic attacks is the most important step to recovery. Triggers can include certain kinds of people, an animal, situations or problems that you must deal with. When you have identified what triggers your panic attacks you can then consider moving on to the next step in dealing with them.
Step 2 – Talk Your Way Through A Panic Attack
You will most likely have experienced a panic attack already before seeking outside help. That means you know what symptoms to watch for. With this in mind, you can talk with yourself to get through the panic attack. This can help you relax and therefore lessen the strength of the attack.
How do you “self talk”? You can talk yourself through a panic attack by simply saying out loud what you know, that things are going to be okay, that you have been through this before, that it will be over soon. This will also help you take regular breaths which also calms you down. While breathing it is important to try and use you diaphragm more.
There are other pre-emptive measures in addition to the above steps to stop panic attacks. Quick solutions and hard judgments, for a start, have to be let go. Be happy and gracious so that your stress won’t lead to further pressure, which can cause your panic attacks. Smokers can help their panic attacks by quitting the habit. Anyone who drinks a lot of coffee should try and reduce their caffeine intake, and it can also help to reduce your alcohol intake.
